.44 Mag Any thoughts? Opinions? Is it at least efficient for self-defense? Or just fun to shoot?

Here's my personal opinion on .44 mag based just on ones I've owned and/or shot:
They are fun to shoot, and the ones I've fired have been really accurate (especially in revolver form). They are good for recreational shooting, hunting, and possibly small bear self-defense. A hollow-point .44 would probably be the ultimate in self-defense in that I'm about 100% positive someone hit by one is dropping immediately and staying down forever.
The problem I see in self-defense is this: First, it's overkill in my opinion. I mean if it's all you have it's fine, but shooting someone is traumatic enough. Shooting someone and then seeing a hole the size of Texas, with guts strewn and blown in every direction (and probably including on you) is going to be that much worse. Also a .44 round (especially if hard ball) will leave the barrel, go through the bad guy, through your wall, through your neighbor's wall, and possibly into your neighbor before stopping. Unless you live where no neighbors are, there's a possibility of casualties. Also, there's going to be a lot more recoil and flash. If it's dark, you'll be blinded. I'll also bet that I can get off 2 accurate 9mm or possibly even 2 .45's in the same time as you can get off 1 accurate .44 mag.
It is a great caliber though, I'll say that.
