Here is a picture highlighting the main changes from the original WW1-era M1911 pistol to the "improved" M1911A1 of WW2 fame. There were lot of other minor changes as well, and this doesn't cover every known variant from every manufacturer. Springfield Armory, for example, has added angled slide serrations.
